From Hiroshima to Fukushima: Fighting the Dangers of Radiation

by grtv

Dr. Shuntaro Hida has been fighting against an invisible enemy for much of his life. And at 95 years old, he's still fighting.

The following text is taken from the Japan Daily News by Radhika Seth:

It probably gives him a sense of déjà vu, which is why 95-year-old retired doctor Shuntaro Hida is getting vocal about the eerie similarity in symptoms of the Fukushima-disaster affected patients and those from the atomic bomb afflicted ones. Hida is doing his bit by giving lectures to residents near the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant and being informative about the effects of inhaling, drinking or eating radioactive substances.

Going by the calls he has received from numerous residents around the Fukushima plant in the past year, the symptoms being described are similar to the ones experienced by the unfortunate victims of the atomic bombs. They are complaining of unexplained fatigue and diarrhoea and hair loss; symptoms that are usually caused by internal exposure to radiation. Hida has researched the unexplained fatigue symptom called Bura Bura disease. According to him it is caused due to radiation exposure. He believes that some people could begin showing symptoms “in one to three years” after the Fukushima meltdowns.

Hiroshima native Hida was an army doctor when he was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombs dropped in 1945. In his career span he has treated more than 6,000 survivors and was the director of the counselling centre at the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations. His expertise in this area is exemplary and he hopes to motivate the younger generation to opt for a nuclear-free world.
